heart no.21: “oni out, happiness in!”

February 3, 2011

tomorrow is the official beginning of Spring in Japan, and today the festival of Setsubun. People throw roasted soybeans out the window/door of their home or at someone in an Oni (demon) mask, chanting “Oni out, luck in!”. The kids today have been having lots of fun running about in hame-made masks, screaming, while their friends lash handfuls of beans at them!

these were hanging up around the kindergarten, to keep away the demons. they don’t like the holly because of the prickles, and they don’t like the mirror-y fishes. the lovely encho-sensei explained all this when he saw me taking photos… (i’m pretty sure he thinks i’m mental).

I finally sat down and painted something this evening, for the first time in about four years i think. Its not very good, but I really enjoyed myself. A lovely start to the spring
